The palace of the Emperor Diocletian at Split in Croatia is today the heart of the inner city of Split. Join archaeologist, Dr Paul Wilkinson, on a long weekend trip that brings the glory of this Imperial residence to life. This ‘no frills’ holiday of £250 does not include flights or hotel but does include all entrance fees, a local guide and ferry to the island of Hvar and coach or bus to the nearby Roman town of Salona.

Friday 21st September
In the morning we will meet at one of the main gates for a tour of this wonderful building.
The ground plan of the palace is an irregular
rectangle with towers projecting from the western, northern, and eastern facades.
It combines the qualities of a luxurious villa with those of a military camp. The three main gates are still preserved to the height of the still surviving ramparts. These monumental gates are set into the middle of each of the rampart walls and led to an enclosed courtyard. The gate overlooking the sea on the southern side was simpler in shape and decoration.

Saturday 22nd September
With so much to see within the Palace we will continue our tour until lunch. Diocletian’s cabbages are still renowned as a local speciality as well as other delicacies slow-cooked in a pot called a ‘Peka’. In the afternoon, we will visit the Archaeological Museum in Split, rightly described as the oldest museum in Croatia and visit Salona, the Roman town set on the hills above Split.

Sunday 23rd September
We will start the day with taking the ferry to the island of Hvar made famous by its harbour. The Venetians realised the potential of the town and harbour and colonised it early on. The Venetian architecture is a feature of the town with the famous Venetian stone lions
embellishing the nobles houses. After lunch we will walk to the theatre, one of the oldest in Europe and up to the Illyrian citadel. We will return to Split by ferry which leaves Starigrad from the other side of the island.

Monday 24th September
An early start by coach to take us to Trogir situated on its own artificial island, its rich culture was created under the influence of Greeks, Romans and Venetians. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site the town is an absolute gem of architectural styles.
