Rome, the Eternal City, was the centre of one of the greatest empires in history and ruins of its past may be found in many of its streets. Join archaeologist, Dr Paul Wilkinson, on a long weekend trip that brings the glory of Imperial Rome to life. This ‘no frills’ holiday of £250 does not include flights, transfers or hotel but does include all entrance fees, a local guide and coach or train to Ostia.

Thursday 31st May
In the morning we will meet at the Pantheon for a tour of this beautiful temple and church. Then we will visit the lively Piazza Navonna, the site of the Stadium of Domitian, before walking to the Mausoleum of Hadrian, now the Castel S. Angelo. After lunch we will visit the Altar of Augustan Peace, the Ara Pacis, the nearby Mausoleum of Augustus, and move on to the Roman Baths of Diocletian. It was here Michelangelo built the Church of St Maria degli Angeli inside the still standing Roman baths. Later we cross the road to see the wonderful treasures of the National Roman Museum.

Friday 1st June
The day starts with a specially arranged visit to the Church of San Clemente. We will see the various archaeological levels of this famous church, followed by a tour of the nearby Colosseum, venue for some of the most grisly games in the Roman world. In the afternoon, we will tour the Roman Forum, rightly described as the most famous meeting place in the world, and in all history. The tour will end with a visit to the Mamertine prison, the Senate House and the Tabularium on Capitoline Hill with its world famous museum. If time we can also walk down to the Tiber and visit the Theatre of Marcellus, the Temple of Apollo Sosianus, the Porticus of Octavia, and Tiber Island.

Saturday 2nd June
We will start the day at the Arch of Constantine, built to commemorate Romes first Christian Emperor. We then move on to visit the Palatine Hill with its famous gardens and museum, after lunch we will walk past the Circus Maximus to the Baths of Caracalla one of the most famous baths in Rome capable of accommodating 1,550 people.

Sunday 3rd June
Another busy day will begin with an early
departure by train or coach to take us to the Roman town and port of Ostia, entry point for the riches of the Empire that would be taken up the Tiber to Rome.
